In the US there is a woman raped ever 6 minutes. What has our world turned in to? This is a huge issue woman should be able to walk on the streets and not be harassed. They should be able to trust any guy that walks up to them. Like in the book, "SPEAK" Melinda is a teenage girl she goes to an end of the summer party and ends up dancing with a guy that is a senior in high school. Later that night she is raped by the same guy or also known as IT, Andy Evans. The biggest concern with this is that she was 14 years old, when she was raped. We need to start thinking and try to protect these types of cases from happening.
After the rape Melinda had no friends or self esteem. I take it this is how other victims take away from their terrible experience. One day you are a normal girl talking with your friends then a day later you have no friends and you feel there is no one to talk to. In the book her other classmates called her a “HO-HO” and “I hate you” sadly was mouthed by her ex-best friend Rachel at lunch. When someone is sexual harassed they need to SPEAK.
Although there is so much stress and drama that comes from a case like this there are something’s you can do about it. The biggest thing to do is to tell a trusted adult or at least tell the police what happened. After that the person is still damaged inside go talk to a Counselor, close friend, or a family member about this and get your feelings out, you cannot bottle it all up inside doing this will cause too much stress and trauma. You can now deal with your friends at school so you have support everywhere you go. Once again you can feel protected and safe.
You may feel safe but you can be a targeted once again. In the book, ”Speak” Andy gets mad at Melinda for telling his date about the rape. He locks her in a closet and attempts to rape her once again. After being raped you not only need to talk to someone you need to keep far distance from the rapper. If it does happen again the victim needs to tell someone that it has happened once again. With the help of the police you can bring them to jail, where they are locked up and everyone can be safe from him.
